Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The University Park Owner’s Guide

Linear keypad and intercom repair in University Park typically runs $145-$385 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad face, the intercom module, or both. We stock Linear-compatible parts on the truck and can usually have the job done same day for keypads, with intercom swaps taking a little longer if wiring needs tracing. Most University Park homeowners discover the problem the way you just did: the keypad works when it wants to, or the intercom crackles like a drive-thru speaker from 1987.

Linear built a lot of the access systems still running in Highland Park and University Park today, and the parts fail in predictable ways. Heat kills the keypad membrane. Moisture gets into the intercom board. And sometimes the problem isn’t the part at all, it’s a corroded wire behind the mounting plate. That’s what we figure out first, because swapping a $200 part onto a bad wire just means you’ll be calling again in three months.

We’re an independent service company, not affiliated with Linear. But we’ve been fixing their equipment in this part of Dallas since 2001, and we know which keypad goes with which board without having to guess.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Most University Park homes with Linear access control fall into one of three series: the AE series (AE-100, AE-500, AE-1000), the older AM/AP series, and the MEGACODE line. The keypad part number is usually on a white label on the back of the faceplate or inside the intercom housing. If the label’s baked off from Texas sun, we match it by measuring the mounting hole spacing and checking the wire count.

Here’s the gotcha most people hit: Linear changed their keypad wiring from 4-wire to 5-wire on the AE-1000 series, and the connectors don’t swap. A 4-wire keypad won’t run a 5-wire board no matter how many YouTube videos say otherwise. If you order the wrong one online, you’ll get a part that lights up and does nothing. We keep both versions in the service van, along with OEM Linear parts and quality aftermarket equivalents where the OEM part has been discontinued.

For intercoms, the main split is between the AMP-600 and the MEGACODE intercom modules. The AMP-600 is analog, two wires to the keypad, and it’s still serviceable. The MEGACODE modules use encrypted rolling code, which is great for security but means you can’t just wire in a generic aftermarket intercom and expect it to talk to your existing keypad. When we match a part, we match the series, not just the brand.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

Here’s what we see most often on service calls in University Park, and what’s actually going on behind each symptom:

  • The keypad only works in the morning or after it rains. That’s a membrane going soft from heat cycling. The top layer separates from the circuit traces, and humidity bridges the gap just enough to register a keypress, then loses contact when it dries out. It will get worse.
  • You have to press the buttons hard, or twice. Same membrane problem, just earlier in the failure. The carbon contacts wear down and the flex layer loses spring. A new keypad face fixes it; no amount of cleaning brings dead contacts back.
  • The intercom buzzes constantly or hums through the speaker. That’s usually a failing capacitor on the intercom board, or a ground wire that’s come loose behind the keypad housing. A buzzing intercom is not a wiring ghost. It’s a part that’s about to quit.
  • The gate opens on its own, or the keypad lights up by itself. This is more common on MEGACODE systems than people realize. Moisture inside the keypad can simulate a button press on the board. We’ve had University Park customers swear someone tried to open their gate at 3 a.m., and it turned out to be a wet keypad from a sprinkler head hitting the brick pillar.
  • The intercom audio is fine one day, static the next. Corrosion on the speaker terminals, usually. If the intercom housing has been painted over by a previous owner or installer, the paint traps moisture against the screws and eats the connection. We see that a lot on older University Park properties where the keypad is mounted on limestone or brick.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For University Park, here’s the honest math on what Linear keypad and intercom repair costs with us:

  • Keypad replacement (AE series, OEM or aftermarket): $145-$225 installed
  • Intercom module replacement (AMP or MEGACODE): $185-$315 installed
  • Keypad and intercom together: $280-$385 installed
  • Wiring repair or trace (if that’s all it needs): $85-$140

The range depends on whether you need just the face, the board, or the whole housing, and whether the mounting box needs re-seating into brick or limestone. Nothing gets quoted on a guess. We look at what’s on the wall, match the part, and give you a price before any work starts. That price is the price. It doesn’t change when we’re done.

Every repair we do carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the keypad acts up again inside 90 days, Hal Gatewood comes back and makes it right. No arguing, no invoice. And remember: $40 off any repair over $200, and no trip charge inside the county. If you’re a senior or a veteran, it’s 10% off, permanent.

DIY or Call Us?

Keypads and intercoms run on low voltage, so we’re not talking about the kind of jammed spring that’ll take your hand off. But there’s a reason we keep getting called out after a homeowner bought a part online: matching the part is where it goes wrong. If you wire a 5-wire keypad into a 4-wire system, or you grab a MEGACODE intercom for an AE-1000 system, best case the keypad lights up and does nothing. Worst case you short the board and turn a $200 repair into a $500 one.

What you can safely do: take off the faceplate, check for obvious corrosion or ants (yes, ants love keypads), and note the wire colors and part number inside. That information helps us bring the right part the first time. But if you want someone who knows the Linear wiring scheme from memory and will stand behind the work for 90 days, call us at (936) 296-2568. Hand me your number and I’ll call you back, same day, every time.
