BFT Welding & Fabrication: The University Park Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT-compatible welding and fabrication parts across University Park, with most gate frame and hinge bracket repairs running $225 to $480 installed and finished the same day we start. The usual way an owner finds out is the gate starts dragging on one corner, or the opener strains and trips its limit sensor, and the cause turns out to be a cracked weld at a hinge mount or a stress point that finally let go. If you’re hearing a gate groan when it moves, or seeing rust blooms along a seam that used to look clean, that’s a weld joint telling you it’s done. We carry BFT-patterned replacement brackets, post plates, and the steel stock to rebuild what’s broken, and our truck is set up to weld on site in your driveway, not in some far-off shop.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT is an Italian brand, and their gate openers show up on a lot of ornamental iron and steel driveway gates around University Park, from the older Deimos and Phobos swing-arm lines to the current Aries and Rigel series. The welding and fabrication side always comes down to the gate itself, not just the motor, because BFT builds operators that mount to steel posts, gate frames, and hinge brackets. Here’s the compatibility gotcha we run into constantly: BFT’s European patterns use metric bolt spacing, usually 160 mm to 200 mm between post-plate centers, where American-made gates often used 4-inch or 6-inch imperial spacing. You cannot just swap one plate for the other without welding new tabs or slotting the plate. That’s exactly the kind of mismatch that gets bodged together and fails again. We match the plate to the actual BFT arm geometry on your unit, and if the original casting is gone, we fabricate a new one from steel that’s thicker than the factory spec. We’re an independent shop, not affiliated with BFT, but we service their gear every week, and we know which aftermarket steel holds up and which Chinese knockoff brackets crack at the weld within a season.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate sags at the latch end and scrapes the driveway or the post. The weld at the top hinge bracket is pulling away from the gate frame or the column plate. The weight of the gate works on that joint every single cycle, and once a crack starts it opens a little more each month.
  • You see a hairline crack in the paint or powder coat, with rust staining the crack line. That’s the classic first sign of a failing weld on a steel gate. The metal flexes microscopic amounts at the seam, the coating cracks, moisture gets in, and the steel rusts from the inside out.
  • The BFT opener shudders or jerks when it starts the gate moving. A cracked weld lets the gate flex when the motor first takes the load, which confuses the opener’s torque sensing and makes it hesitate or pulse.
  • The gate is suddenly harder to push by hand after a good wind or a hard close. Something moved. Usually a hinge bracket rotated on its post because the weld or the anchor bolts let go. The gate is now fighting itself and the opener is paying for it.
  • You hear a click or a tick from the hinge side when the gate reverses. That’s metal on metal movement across a crack that opens and closes under load. It will not heal. It will get longer, and eventually the bracket tears off the post and the gate drops.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In University Park, a welded bracket repair or hinge re-weld runs $225 to $380 for most single swing gates, and full gate fabrication starts around $480 and goes up with size, steel weight, and finish work. What drives the range is how much of the old weld has to be ground out, whether we need to cut and fit new steel plate, and whether the gate has to come off its hinges or can be welded in place. Every quote includes the labor, the steel, the welding consumables, and primer and paint over the repair so it doesn’t flash rust by next spring. You get the price before we touch the gate, and that price is locked once we agree on it. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the repair in writing: if the weld cracks or the gate sags in the first ninety days, we come back and fix it at no charge. Hal Gatewood has been welding gates in this part of Dallas since 2001, and nothing leaves our hands until the gate swings true and the latch catches clean.

DIY or Call Us?

You can check a few things without touching a welder. Walk the gate and look for rust bloom at every weld seam, especially where the hinge brackets meet the frame and where the gate frame meets the post plates. Push the gate halfway open and watch the hinges while someone moves it gently, you’ll see a cracked weld open and close if it’s there. But once you find the crack, stop. Welding a load-bearing gate hinge is not a beginner’s project. A bad weld on a hinge bracket can let a 400-pound gate drop on a person, and the repair has to be done in position, often while holding the gate in place under load. We’ve fixed more than a few homeowner welds that looked fine for a month and sheared off at the worst time. If you’re in University Park and the gate is cracked, call (936) 296-2568 and we’ll come look at it. The estimate is free, and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s a re-weld or a full rebuild.
