BFT Access Control Installation: The University Park Owner’s Guide

BFT access control installation in University Park typically runs $675-$1,450 installed, depending on which BFT control board, keypad, or receiver you’re replacing and whether we’re adding new wiring or reusing the existing run. We keep the most common BFT parts on the truck, so a straightforward board swap happens the same day in most cases. The way most University Park homeowners find out their BFT access control has failed is simple: the keypad stops opening the gate, the remote that worked yesterday does nothing today, or the gate opens for every car on the street because the safety loop quit reading. If you’re standing in the driveway holding a keypad that lights up but won’t trip the gate, this page is for you.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has been making gate operators and access control boards for a long time, and the compatibility picture is messier than most people think. The two lines we see most often around University Park are the older BFT Deimos, BFT Ares, and BFT Rigel series, and the newer BFT Thalia, BFT Phobos, and BFT Icaro lines that started showing up around 2014. The access control side of things splits into a few groups: the BFT Mitto remote kits, the BFT Q-box receivers, the BFT Clonix cloning remotes, the BFT D-track and BFT Ultra plug-in receivers, and the wired keypads like the BFT Deimos BT and the BFT Rigel 5/6 wall stations.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: BFT receivers use two different frequency bands depending on the age of the unit. The older 433.92 MHz receivers won’t talk to the newer 868 MHz remotes, and the opposite is just as true. If you bought a BFT remote online because it “fits BFT”, and it won’t program, you’ve probably got a frequency mismatch, not a bad part. The fix is matching the receiver and remote frequency, and in some cases we install a universal receiver that handles both so the next owner doesn’t have the same fight. The other gotcha is the wired keypad wiring order: BFT keypads use a specific terminal sequence, and if someone reversed the common and the trigger wire, the keypad lights up but sends no signal. We see that on jobs where another company or a well-meaning neighbor “fixed” it first.

Gatewood Fence & Gate is an independent service company. We’re not affiliated with BFT, but we’ve been servicing and installing BFT equipment since 2001, and we stock OEM and quality aftermarket parts for most BFT models. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls when a BFT panel is paired with a different brand opener.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • The keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t move. This is usually a dead relay on the control board or a broken trigger wire between the keypad and the operator. The keypad is talking, but the gate isn’t listening. We test the wire at the board first, and if the relay clicks but the gate sits still, the board is the culprit.
  • Remotes work from the driveway but not from the street. This is the classic sign of a failing receiver antenna. The little wire antenna on a BFT receiver corrodes at the connection point over time, especially with our humidity swings in North Texas, and the range shrinks from 100 feet down to 15. A new antenna or a new receiver brings the range right back.
  • The gate opens on its own, or stays open after a car passes. If you have safety loops cut into the driveway, the loop detector is likely failing or the loop wire has cracked. That’s the part telling the gate a car is still sitting there. If the access control board isn’t reading the loop, the gate defaults to open so it doesn’t close on a car. We find broken loop wires all the time in University Park driveways where tree roots have shifted the concrete.
  • The access panel shows error codes you’ve never seen, or the display is scrambled. BFT boards run on small processors, and the heat inside a metal gate box in a University Park summer bakes these boards over time. Once the display starts glitching, the board is on borrowed time. We can sometimes reset it, but in our experience a glitching BFT board fails fully within a month or two.
  • You added a new remote and now nothing works. BFT remotes are programmed in sequence on some models, and if someone interrupted the programming cycle or mixed up the remote types, the receiver memory gets corrupted. We straighten out programming mistakes from DIY installs and from other companies that didn’t finish the job. Sometimes the fix is a reprogramming; sometimes the receiver needs replacement if the memory chip is fried.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For University Park homes, here’s what we typically see on BFT access control work:

  • BFT keypad replacement (wired or wireless): $225-$410 installed, including the keypad, mounting hardware, and reprogramming to your existing receiver.
  • BFT receiver replacement: $190-$380 installed, including matching the frequency to your existing remotes and reprogramming all remotes.
  • BFT control board replacement: $420-$850 installed, depending on the model and whether we’re also replacing the power supply or the loop detector on the same board.
  • BFT remote cloning or addition: $55-$95 per remote, programmed and tested before we leave.
  • Full access control panel upgrade (keypad + receiver + board): $675-$1,450 installed, including new weather seals on the enclosure and a full system test.

The range comes down to whether we’re reusing your existing wiring and enclosure or replacing them. In University Park, we see a lot of older installations where the low-voltage wire from the house to the gate is cracked or chewed, and reusing it would just mean another service call in six months. When the wire is bad, we’ll tell you before we start, and the price we give you includes that work. Every quote is agreed before we turn a screwdriver, and it doesn’t change at the door. The work carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if something’s not right after we leave, one call brings me back. We also honor a permanent 10% discount for seniors and veterans, and $40 off any repair over $200.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a couple of things you can safely check before calling. Look at the keypad or receiver for obvious damage: a cracked housing, a burnt smell, a display that’s out. Check the breaker or the power source to the gate. If the keypad is completely dead, it might be as simple as a tripped GFCI. Those checks are safe, and they’re worth the two minutes.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong on BFT access control: the control board and the receiver live inside the operator box next to the gate motor, and the capacitor in that box stores enough charge to hurt you even with the breaker off. We’ve seen people open the box and short something against a tool. The low-voltage wiring on the keypad side won’t bite you, but inside that gate operator box, the line voltage is a different animal. If you’re not sure which side you’re dealing with, don’t open it. The other issue is programming: BFT systems use a sequence of button presses and DIP switches that’s easy to get wrong, and the wrong setting can leave your gate stuck open at 2 a.m. We’d rather you call us for that. The name is on the shop, and the shop is down the road. Hand me your number and I’ll call you back, same day, every time. Call (936) 296-2568 and we’ll get you squared away.
